Obituary for Marjorie Ann Nitcy VonArx
Marjorie Ann Nitcy VonArx, 53, from Big Timber, Montana, passed away at the PMC Wednesday, November 8th. Her family and loved ones held vigil until her death in the early morning hours.
Marjorie was born on September 14, 1964 to parents Gary and Karen Nitcy at the old Sweet Grass Community Hospital in Big Timber. Majorie loved the outdoors, especially walking along the Boulder or Yellowstone River. In her early years, she and her older brother, Loren and older sister, Lesa, spent their days on the “Island,” land edging the Yellowstone River. They fished, hunted for agates and mushrooms, and ran among the willows and cottonwood trees. It began Marjorie’s love affair with the outdoors, particular those lands running from the West Boulder, up to the Crazy Mountains.
She was creative, evidenced by her beautiful gardens and many art projects. She loved to cook, can vegetables from the garden, and spend time with friends. She enjoyed fishing and hunting, rafting the Yellowstone, and looking for chokecherries to make syrup. She also enjoyed painting, doing bead work, and redecorating her home. Marjorie was a passionate protector of dogs and cats, taking in strays and abandoned animals, pulling them into her family circle. She loved them intensely while they were in her care and grieved them with equal intensity when gone.
She was known to be loyal, thoughtful, and if crossed, fierce. Even as her fiery red hair reflected her strong personality, she was equally tender, trusting and vulnerable at times. Marjorie was always ready to help the next person. She also endured; Marjorie encountered some difficult days and persisted with life, as hard as that was at times.
Marjorie attended schools in Big Timber and Roosevelt, Utah. She married and later divorced Joe VonArx after having one daughter, Melissa; who, with her son Landon, live in Pennsylvania. Marjorie met and traveled with Steve Saye, through his job in Montana and California.
Marjorie held a number jobs as a cashier and was a union member. Her favorite job was serving as a private rural postal delivery contractor, driving routes to such places as McLeod and Springdale. She enjoyed seeing the beautiful landscape along the backroads, watching seasons change, understanding her connection to it all.
Marjorie was fortunate to have good friends, too many to name, who she chose to be family. Among those many friends, she was preceded in death by long time companion, Clyde Chapel.
In these last years, she truly enjoyed spending time with Ken Abbott, her special friend, on his ranch north of Big Timber. They worked the ranch together and were able to share their deep love of the land and the work required to keep a ranch going.
Marjorie is survived by her parents, mother Karen Herman (Ted) and father Gary Nitcy (Shirley), daughter Melissa and grandson Landon; brother, Loren Nitcy, of Big Timber, sister, Lesa Nitcy Hope (Martyn) and nieces, Nadia and Anna Rose Hope, Atlanta; stepsisters, Heather O’lean and her children, Tonya Plewinski and her children, and stepbrother Jeff Herman and his children; three uncles, Robert and Perry Nitcy of Bozeman, Frank Fessenden of Livingston, one aunt, Lucille Noble of Iowa, and 6 cousins.
Marjorie was a designated organ donor and felt this program was important to be a part of. Cremation has taken place, handled by Stenberg Funeral Home. As per Marjorie’s request, there will be no service. Donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
