Obituary for Ben J. Raisland
On January 13, 2017, we lost our loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend and gentleman.
He has left behind many happy memories, and had a great life ranching, playing the accordion, dancing or playing pinochle with family and friends.
Ben was born at the family home on Wild Cat, north of Big Timber on June 6, 1920 to Sivert and Christina Raisland.
He attended local schools, and worked for various ranches, always having a job, as he was willing to herd sheep, milk cows.
Ben was drafted into service in 1942 and served 4 years in the US Army Air Corps. He was honorably discharged January 1, 1946. While on furlough, he married Edna Nygaard on June 27, 1943 in Columbus, MT, they lived in Salinas, CA, Sioux Falls, SD, Flora, MS, Aberdeen, MD, and Macon, GA.
After his discharge, he farmed on the Boulder River for a year, then bought a ranch six miles North West of Reed Point, where they lived until 1967, then moving to the ranch up Swamp Creek, then in March 1990 to the current home in Big Timber for retirement.
Ben is survived by 7 children; Carol Schott, Alvin (Marilyn), Nancy Hanson, Una (Walt) Earl, Olen (Barbara), Glen (Karen) and Diane Raisland. 17 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.
Ben was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Edna, daughter Florence Fanning, grandsons Tyrel Raisland and Brandon Myers, brother Selmer, sisters; Josie Boe, Bertha Allestad and Cora Peterson and parents Sivert and Christina.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday January 20 at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
