Obituary for Clarence Sherman Rostad
Clarence Sherman Rostad was born on April 28, 1914, the 10th of 11 children born to George O. and Susanna Gjertine Ellingson Rostad at “the little house” on East 6th street in Big Timber. After a few years they moved into “the big house” on McLeod Street, now called The Homestead. They were the second owners of that house. They would live on the ranch during the summers and on weekends, and live in town with their mother during the school year.

He went to grade school in Big Timber and then took a short course in agriculture at Montana State College in Bozeman. He also served in the U.S. Army from June of 1942 to June 1943.

Clarence went to work on his father’s ranches and had been ranching ever since. He remembered fondly the times he was sheepherding for his father on the East Fork Ranch and the McLeod Ranch. It was when he was at McLeod, that he watched Hunter’s Hot Springs burn down.

Clarence moved to his ranch on the Old Boulder Road in 1944, and married Ruth May Bernice Hauge on May 9, 1946, together they had 6 children.

Clarence played the harmonica when he was young and took it up again when he was in his 70’s. He loved playing Happy Birthday for anyone and everyone who would tell him their birthday. He also loved playing hymns. For several years he would play every week at the PMC, for “the old people”, many of whom were younger than he was.

When Ruth got Parkinson’s disease, he leased out the ranch to take care of her. When that got to be too much, she went to the PMC and he went to see her every day. Ruth died June 29, 2003.

Clarence moved to the PMC in January of 2014.

Clarence loved the Lord, his life, his wife, his children and his friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Ruth, his grandson Benjy Andersen, his parents, sisters; Cora, Georgina, Ida, Emma, and Alice and his brothers; Ora, Johnny, Henry, Peter and the 2nd Ora.

He is survived by his son George (Terri), and their children George Jr. and his son Cade, Susanna (Tom) Anderson and their children Ashley, Christopher, Nicholas, Maria and her son Timothy, Clarence (Emilee) and their sons Chace and Jacob, Donald (Sarah) and their son Jiraiya. His daughter Shirley (Joe) Bowden, and their children; Jennifer (Erik) Hansen, with Kyler and Bridger, Katie (Allen) Griffin with Adam, Zack and Josie, Nathan (Christina) with Lindy and Ellisa. His daughter Emily (Jerry) Graves, their children Jason (Margo) Andersen with Ryker and Riley, Jordan (Jesse) with Henry and another on the way, Jerick (Katy) with Liam. His son Dan, his daughter Diane (John) Vaia and her children Annie (Cameron) Fraser with Alexis, Colt, Cort, Will and Bess, and his son Ken (Rica). That’s 6 children, 14 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Marguerite Rostad and many nieces, nephews and their families.

He lived a wonderful life!
