Obituary for David A. Wagner
David A. Wagner, 88, of Big Timber passed away Friday October 28, 2016 at Brookdale Springmeadows Assisted Living in Bozeman.
Dave was born to Albert and Mildred (Dean) Wagner at the Wagner home at 208 West 6th Avenue in Big Timber on March 17, 1928, with the help of a midwife.
Dave attended school in Big Timber and graduated from Sweet Grass County High in May 1946. In September of 1946, Dave joined the U.S. Army, and after Basic Training he served a year in Otsu, Japan with the 35th Infantry Regiment-25th Infantry Division. He also spent four seasons with the U.S. Forest Service in the Big Timber area.
Dave married Ila V. Luttschwager on February 20, 1954 in Glendive. They had two daughters, Vernel and Cassie.
Dave spent 36 ½ years with the Northern Pacific Railway and the Burlington Northern Railroad, working with the Track Department as an operator of the welding machine at Big Timber, making the first welded rail on the Northern Pacific railroad which continues today at Laurel, MT. He worked 17 of those years as a Track Welder from Livingston to Mandan, ND, then as a truck driver, track inspector and Section Foreman.
Dave was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Ila and he is survived by his younger sister Shirley of Big Timber, daughters Vernel Wagner of Bedford, WY and Cassie Helvik of Manhattan, grandchildren; Mikal (Brittany) Helvik of Silverdale, WA, Elaine (Landon) Selby of Cody, WY and Michelle and Jay Helvik of Bozeman, great- grandson Hunter Helvik of WA and great- granddaughter Marie Helvik of Bozeman.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday April 29, 2017 at Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will follow at the American Legion. Condolences for the family may be made at www.stenbergfuneralhome.com
