Obituary for DeVerle James Van Campen
DeVerle was born on December 28, 1953, in LaJunta Colorado, to James Vernon Van Campen and Laura Daisy Taylor, the 5th of six children. He passed away in Billings, Montana, on May 10, 2021, following complications from a fall off the steps of his newly purchased camper, in which he was planning to do extensive travel this summer and attend family reunions in Colorado and Kansas. In his early years he loved his puppy Tippy and they were best buddies. He grew up on a farm and learned the value of life at an early age, he loved his animals and his pets, as reflected by the number of pets he has had during his lifetime and still has. Through family values he learned to love his Lord, his family, friends and his great country.

DeVerle joined the U.S. Navy at age 17 and was stationed at Camp Pendleton California through basic training where he completed his training as a Corpsman. He finished his first 4 year tour and returned to western Kansas and married Paula Renee Thomas, they had 3 children, Amber Renee, James Trever and Cort William. After working at a few farms in Scott County KS, he re-enlisted with the Navy and served until he had served his beloved country for 20 years. During his tenure he was assigned to several ships and was a recruiter when he was promoted to Chief Petty Officer (E-7) and was deployed during the second wave of Desert Storm to the small country of Kuwait to protect from the Iraqi invasion of 1991. During his enlistment he was awarded many service awards and medals, as well as being recognized for his exemplary service.

In 1994 he retired from the Navy and moved to Harlowton, MT where he worked for the Forest Service and then for Painters Coast to Coast which later changed to Painters Ace Hardware and eventually to Remedies Pharmacy and Hardware. There was a period of time that DeVerle and his brother Harlen worked as handymen in the Harlowton area and blessed many people with their talents. Sadly, while serving in the Navy, he developed several disabilities causing him to go into early disability and retirement. The past few years were somewhat of a struggle from going to doctor appointments and having many surgeries to struggling with continual pain. On Monday May 10, 2021, DeVerle graduated into the arms of his beloved Savior and has no more pain.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Amber Renee, one sister, Brenda Kay Land, and is survived by sons, Trever and Cort (Jenny), sister Nina Haupt (Gary), brothers Don (Cheryl), Richard (Ethel), and Harlen. Also survived by nine grandchildren, Taylor (Maria), Cody (Kimberly), Samantha (Conner), Kale, Kole and Aspyn (Trever) Brad, Jeremey and Hailey (Cort) and several great grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and cousins and many many friends and neighbors. All of whom will miss him and his great cooking and jelly and jam!!!

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held 11am Saturday May 22nd at Harlowton Faith Chapel.
