Francis (Frank) Sam Cosgriff, 87, was called home December 4, 2022, surrounded by family.
Frank was born in 1935 in Big Timber, MT. He attended elementary school in a one-room schoolhouse on Otter Creek before graduating from Sweet Grass High School then Montana State College (now MSU) with an Ag Engineering degree in 1957. Shortly thereafter, Frank received a call that his father was ill and returned to Otter Creek to work the D-4 ranch, later Quarter Circle D4 until 2020 when he decided it was time to be “semi-retired.”
A little matchmaking by Carol O’Dell at a Sons of Norway dance led to a date with Judy. They were married in December 1979. Judy and her son Phil moved to the ranch. Four years later, Evan joined the family.
Most days, Frank could be found chasing sheep, cows, chickens, and the occasional pig or horse depending on his mother’s current projects. Once he got his first 3-wheeler, life at the ranch got a little faster. He eventually moved up to an enclosed side-by-side and couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t done it sooner.
His favorite activities included pontificating on current events at the Frosty Freeze, an active role in the TV Booster club, and dissecting agricultural equipment.
Frank is survived by his wife Judy; sons Phil (Davey) of Belgrade; Evan (Ginny) of Saint Paul, Minnesota; and two grandchildren Nicholas (Erica) and Kaitlyn (Brynon); three great grandchildren; and numerous nephews and a niece. He was preceded in death by his parents John Robert and Kaia, his brothers Robert and Ralph, and sister Maxine and her three children.
Cremation has taken place and a Celebration of Frank’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to Big Timber Tech or the Hospitality House.
