Obituary for Garret Cornelius Knoll
Garret Cornelius Knoll was born on June 21, 1935, to Nicholas and Margaret (Austoff) Knoll in Platte, SD. The youngest of five children, Garret was raised on the family farm Northeast of Platte.
Upon graduation from Platte High School is 1954, he moved to Michigan where he worked in construction for a year before returning to Platte where he met and married Anna Mae Van Zee on April 7, 1955. They made their home on the Knoll Family Farm where they raised four boys: Dan, Dave, Steve and Tom.
Garret and Mae operated a dairy and farmed, raised hogs, and Garret worked as a dairy order-buyer for 32 years. After retiring from farming, Garret worked as an exterminator for Orkin, and a truck driver for Wheat Growers in Chamberlain and Aberdeen. In 2005, Garret and Mae moved to Hamilton, MT, where Garret helped his son Steve in housing construction and worked as the development’s “handy man”. In the Fall, he loved to drive truck for his son, Tom, in Big Timber, during the wheat harvest. He enjoyed buying and selling horse trailers, 4 wheelers, and anything he thought he could make a profit selling. His greatest joy was spending time with his eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Garret and Mae moved to Big Timber, MT, in November, 2015, where he lived until his passing on May 8, 2016.
Garret was a born-again Christian who loved and served his Lord. He loved to witness and share Jesus whenever the opportunity presented itself and was blessed to know all of his family accepted Jesus as their Savior. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Garret is survived by his wife of 61 years, Anna Mae; his sons, David (Maryann) of Platte, SD, Steve (Jill) of Harrodsburg, KY, and Tom of Big Timber, MT; eighteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his sisters, Alice Wiersma and Wilma Knoll; his in-laws, Helen Dyk, Andy and Eileen Van Zee, and Roy Bruinsma; and many nieces and nephews.
Garret was preceded in death by his parents, Nicholas and Margaret Knoll; his oldest son, Daniel Knoll; his sister’s, Cora Vruegdenhil and Nola Hannink; six brother-in-law’s and two sister-in-law’s.
