Obituary for IVAR S. STENBERG
Ivar S. Stenberg , 79, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday February 8, 2015 at Pioneer Medical Center. Ivar was born on the family farm at Stenberg near Moi, Norway on September 5, 1935 to Selmer and Severine Handeland Stenberg. He attended school there and served in the Norwegian Army. He came to Big Timber in April of 1958 and worked at various jobs. He married Peggy Thomason on July 16, 1961. They moved to Butte where he was working whenhe was injured in a mining accident. He learned to do upholstery and they moved back to Big Timber in 1967 where he had his upholstery shop and was also a member of the Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department. Their son Erik was born in 1967 and Karl in 1969. The family moved to a small ranch north of town in 1975 where they raised cattle, sheep and pigs. They also had a small grocery store. They moved back to Big Timber in 1990. Ivar taught himself to play the accordion and loved to play Norwegian songs, especially waltzes. He enjoyed dancing also. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Torbjorn and Severin. Ivar is survived by his wife Peggy, sons; Erik (Jolene) and Karl (Roxanne Huffman) of Big Timber, his brother Olav (Gladys) of McLeod, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, his cousin Gunvald Rusdal of Gig Harbor,WA numerous nieces and nephews and many relatives in Norway. Viewing will be from 12-6pm Sunday February 15 at Stenberg Funeral Home and Funeral Services 2pm Monday with interment following at Mountain View Cemetery. A reception will follow at the American Legion Club.
