Jacqulyn Jean Hudecek peacefully passed away on Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2022 at her home in Springdale Montana. She was born 1-13-1934 in Minneapolis Minnesota to William and Sarah Svoboda. Jackie attended school in the St. Paul area and headed west after graduation. Jackie was working at Leffingwell’s Dude Ranch on Brackett Creek when she met a handsome cowboy at a barn dance. She later married this cowboy, James Edward Hudecek on December 1, 1953 in Helena Montana. Jackie and Jim worked at several area ranches. In 1957 an opportunity opened up for Jackie to become the Postmaster in Springdale Montana, she served in this position for the next 53 years. The post office was in the family home. Jackie’s role as postmaster was more than just selling a stamp, often times locals would come join her for a cup of coffee a cookie and share stories. She developed many long term friends. “Grandma” as just about everyone knew her related or not, loved her garden and would continue to share the fruits of her work with family and friends. Her gardening habit earned her the nickname digger, as she would often dig up a plant just to replant it elsewhere. Grandma was known to work hard and keep everyone else in line too. A famous quote from Grandma Jackie was “While the rest of you are trying to decide if you are going to live or die, I will be out in my garden.” She was a member of the Kill Kare Klub, an avid reader and a stamp collector. Jackie enjoyed attending the First Congregational Church in Big Timer.
Grandma Jackie was preceded in death by her husband, James Hudecek; parents, William and Sarah Svoboda; brother, Robert Svoboda; and daughter Sandra Hudecek-Nelson. She is survived by sister, Carol Lager; children Tony Hudecek (Bonnie), and Jill Kraus (Dave); grandchildren: Chris Williams (Dan), Ed Raihl (Kim), Amanda Raihl, Kate Holybee, Kim Vindiola (Richard), Dana Pratt (Tim), Michelle Herzog, Rebecca Herzog (Brad Fitch).
