Obituary for James Donald Woolsey
James Donald Woolsey, 96, of Big Timber passed away Friday September 7, 2018 at the Pioneer Medical Center.
Jim was born September 5, 1922 in Big Timber, was raised on Enos Creek and the East Boulder River. He had three sisters, attended the East Boulder School, graduated from Sweet Grass High School, joined the Army Air Corp and was a proud veteran of WWII. +
Jim was part of an 8-man crew flying out of Bassingborne, England, from October, 1944 to March, 1945 completing 35 missions as part of the Eighth Air Force, Squadron, 91st Bomber Group. These were dangerous, but successful missions. He was discharged October 27, 1945, in San Diego, California. He remained close to his flight crew, having two reunions over the years.
Jim married Beryl Christle Thoen in 1958 in Minnesota. He ranched with his father, and later purchased the ranch which included his grandfather Woolsey’s homestead. They later sold the ranch, retiring in Big Timber. Beryl passed away January, 2009. Jim has resided in the Pioneer Medical Center for the last 10 years.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Graham and Minnie Woolsey, sisters; Rebecca Munsell, Joyce Hansen, and Beth Deegan, his stepdaughter, Charlotte Thoen, and his wife, Beryl.
Jim was an awesome uncle, and is survived by many nieces and nephews. His dry sense of humor and knack for giving people clever nicknames that fit, will be missed.
Graveside services with military honors will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday September 14 at Mountain View Cemetery with a luncheon to follow at the American Legion.
