Obituary for James Kermit 'Jim' Scholten
James Kermit Scholten passed away peacefully and went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, December 3, 2019.
Jim was born to Guy and Jessie (Huyser) Scholten on the family ranch on Dry Creek. Jim rode horseback for 8 years to Dry Creek School and for the first 2 years to Sweet Grass County High School. He and his brothers had many races and a few good accidents.
After graduating from high school in 1950, Jim enlisted in the Air Force. After basic training, Aircraft and Engine School, Jet Engine School, he was based at the Johnson Air Base in Japan. He was assigned to the 339th Fighter Squadron where he became a Crew Chief on the fighter plane F94Bs. After the Korean War,Jim finished his tour at the Andrews Air Base outside of Washington D.C.
During a 30 day leave, Jim met the love of his life, Alta Lindley, at a Sunday family dinner. In Jim's words, "The best thing I've done with my life was to get serious about Alta". They were married October 19, 1956 and just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Jim and Alta purchased the family ranch on Dry Creek and have lived there ever since.
Jim was very active in Sweet Grass County. He served on the Sweet Grass County High School Board for 12 years, Soil Conservation Board for 17 years, Evangelical Church Camp Board for 20 years, President of the Dry Creek Canal Co. for 40 years, member of the Board of Directors at the Hospitality House, and life-time member of the Big Timber Evangelical Church.
Jim will be remembered for his love for his wife and family, love for the family ranch, his service to the church in so many areas and his strong relationship with his Lord and Savior. He will be missed by so many.
Jim is survived by wife, Alta; children Peggy (Charles) Becken, Lauren (Barbara) Scholten; grandchildren Morgan and Brandon Scholten; brothers Dewey (Darlene) Scholten, Gerald (Patricia) Scholten; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Jessie Scholten.
The family would like to invite you to a celebration of life at 2:00 PM at the Big Timber Evangelical Church (302 Bramble Street) on Monday, December 9, 2019 with a reception following. Memorials may be given to Montana on a Mission (PO Box 696, Big Timber, MT 59011) or charity of your choice.
