Obituary for Jane Marie Stene
The plans to retire on January 1st and spend the next years enjoying watching the grandkids grow had to be abandoned. When the diagnosis of cancer came at Thanksgiving, Jane’s comment was, “I am trusting God to take me through this stage of life also.” That attitude defined Jane’s life from the time she was a young girl. She was born February 7, 1954 in Columbus, Montana to Wilbur and May (Larsen) Williams. Her parents moved from Melville to Big Timber when she was seven and many adventures occurred at the farm on the Boulder River east of town. She grew up there and ended up back there to raise her own family. She was active in 4-H, FHA and the Evangelical church youth group. Significant was the fact that her brother’s best friend, Einar, also became her best friend. They were married June 7, 1975. Elisa May and John Mikal joined the family and her life revolved around the activities of her kids and enjoying adventures that were influenced by Einar’s strong Norwegian heritage which included trips to Norway and hosting families here.

Jane’s strong work ethic took her from a high school car hop at A&W to 25 years in Sweet Grass County Treasurer’s Office. Ironic was the fact that her mother’s office as a nurse at Sweet Grass Community Hospital became her County Treasurer’s office after the hospital closed and was remodeled. Jane enjoyed her work as treasurer, the responsibility that went with it, and the opportunity to meet and become friends with many residents of Sweet Grass County, and throughout the state.

Jane’s life didn’t make many headlines but she was passionate about honoring Jesus Christ in all that she did and was able to pass that to her next generation. She was active in the Big Timber Lutheran Church and the Big Timber Quilting Group. She had a reputation as a good seamstress and that developed into a passion for quilting and those quilts will honor her memory for many years to come. Jane also loved literature, music and the color green, along with her Saturday morning coffee group composed of her close friends, many of whom were her friends since grade school.

Jane Marie Stene died in her own home overlooking the golf course with the view of the Crazy Mountains, surrounded by her family on December 18, 2018. Preceding her in death were her mother and father, and step-father Mikal Lotoft.

Survivors include her husband Einar Stene, son John Mikal Stene (Trina) grandson Karsten, daughter Elisa May Carrothers (Ken) granddaughters Tomina and Magreta. Included also are brother John (Betty) Williams and sister-in-law Oddlaug (Don) Anderson. A Memorial Service for Jane will be held at 10:30am on Friday December 28th at Big Timber Lutheran Church preceded by a private Interment at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to “Jane Stene Memorial Fund” at Citizen’s Bank.
