Obituary for Kenneth G. Thompson
Kenneth G. Thompson 84, of Big Timber, Montana passed away peacefully on July 15, 2016 at the Pioneer Medical Center. He was born in Big Timber on April 14, 1932 to Sven and Ellen Thompson. He grew up on the family ranch where the Boulder River meets the Yellowstone River. He attended Big Timber Grade School and Sweet Grass County High School, graduating in 1950.
Kenneth loved the outdoors, especially the Boulder Mountains where he spent time as a camp tender, at sheep camp, during his youth. After graduating from high school he joined the United States Air Force where he served as a radio operator on a KC-97 re-fueling plane. After returning to Big Timber from the service he met and married Catherine in 1955. They had three wonderful children David, Kay and Lori. He was elected Sheriff in 1957 serving the county of Sweet Grass until 1977. During his time as Sheriff he was instrumental in organizing the Sheriff’s Posse. He enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, and camping mostly up the Boulder.
He is survived by his wife Catherine of 60 years, a son David (Debbie) Thompson and their children Mariah, Andrew, Lauren and Madeline; two daughters Kay (Duane) Myrstol and their children Catherine (Shane), Derek (Amanda), Nathan and Kaycee; and Lori and her children Austin and Ally. A sister Anna (Lorn) Pudwill and two great grandchildren Destiny and Ethan, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by both his parents, three brothers Teddy, Allen and Amos and one sister Solvieg and sister-in-law Annette.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all those with Hearts and Hands Hospice and the Pioneer Medical Center for the wonderful care given to him in his final days.
Cremation has taken place and services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 20th at the Big Timber Lutheran Church, with internment following at Mountain View Cemetery.
