Obituary for Margaret Alice Deegan
Margaret Alice (Viets) Deegan passed away November 18, 2018 with her daughter Kathy by her side. Margaret was born January 4, 1927 to Christine and Johann Viets in Bozeman, MT. She lived in the Gibson area and attended elementary school at Knob Hill schoolhouse and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in 1945.
She married Alva Deegan on September 26, 1947 and they had two daughters, Kathy and Kristy.
During her lifetime she raced horses (bareback), herded sheep, worked at Van Cleve Dude Ranch, Cole Drug Store, cooked at the hospital, worked in the laundry and as a nurses’ assistant at the rest home. She was probably best known as a very talented seamstress and it seemed there was no project she couldn’t tackle. She continued to take in alterations until three years ago. At one time she was high woman in her district in Montana for small bore rifle competition.
She especially loved gardening, sewing, sudoku puzzles, crafts, and games. Each Saturday night she looked forward to playing pinochle with Holly and Glenn Berg, Norene Brown, Gudren Kelly, and Louise Bainter. She was known for passing out homemade caramel popcorn balls at Halloween. She enjoyed hosting her annual 4th of July picnic for family and friends.
She had a very special friend in Joyce Stephens, whom she went to lunch with each week and who was always available to help. Her nieces Connie Lindner, Holly Berg, and Sherry Tucker were always there to run errands, visit, and take her to appointments. She loved her family and especially looked forward to her Sunday evening phone calls from her granddaughter Megan.
She is survived by her two daughters: Kathy (Scott) McDonald of Helena and Kristy (Chuck) Schmeichel of Jamestown, ND; her grandchildren Shannon (Olivier) Alwyn of Mountain View, CA; Megan Folsom (Michael) of Helena; Amie Schmeichel of Los Angeles, CA; and Kayla Schmeichel of Jamestown, ND; and her great grandson Carter Alwyn. She is also survived by two sisters Betty Monroe and Leona Flattum, both of Billings, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Al in 1985, her parents, her brother Johnny Viets, and her sister Kathleen Lindner.
Her family would like to especially thank Sarah Walton, FNP, Ace Walker, MD, Michelle Lizotte, MD, and Ed Gonzalez, MD and the entire staff at Pioneer Medical Center for their wonderful care these past few weeks.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the Big Timber Lutheran Church at 11:00 AM followed by a graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the PMC Cardiac Rehabilitation facility, PO Box 1228, Big Timber, MT 59011 or a memorial of your choice.
