Obituary for Ronald William Carlson

Ronald William Carlson, 74, of Big Timber, Montana, passed away, Monday, June 6, 2022 at his home.

Born in Helena, MT on March 27, 1948 to Harry Carl Carlson and Dollas (Dot) Pierce Carlson; his youth was spent as the middle brother with sisters Adare and Linda. Ron attended elementary schools in Billings and graduated from Billings West in 1966. Summers during high school and college were spent in Red Lodge working at the Fish Wildlife and Parks fish hatchery.
While attending college at Montana State in Bozeman he met Linda Halley; which was just the perfect start to a 51 year adventure. They were married in Fort Benton, Montana on August 15, 1970.

After attending Montana State University and the University of Montana as a member of the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, he graduated with a degree in Wildlife Management in 1973. His first job as a game warden was in Missoula, Montana.
On February 3, 1973 Seth Allan joined the family. Very shortly after this the family relocated to Polson, Montana. On June 3, 1975 Chad Michael came along and then on September 10, 1976 Stacey Lynn made this family of 5 complete.

In October 1979 Ron and Linda had the opportunity to move their family to Big Timber, as a Warden spot opened up in this beautiful community. This is the place that has been home ever since.

An avid outdoorsman his entire life, Ron loved spending time hunting, fishing, competitive shooting, and gunsmithing. He enjoyed the amazing area where he got to work and all that nature provided him. He enjoyed sharing his love of the outdoors paying it forward by teaching and sharing his skills. He was an instructor for hunter’s safety and taught shooting sports to many SGHS gym classes. He volunteered for the Big Timber Volunteer Fire Department and was active on the Big Timber Baseball and Softball programs.

Ron loved family time. He loved to camp, although many times he would set up camp and then have to work and patrol the nearby areas. He loved to ride horseback into the mountain back country and fish in the mountain lakes.
Upon his retirement from FWP in 1999, Ron began building beautiful HEAVY pieces of furniture; from end tables to beds to benches he enjoyed taking an idea and turning it into an amazing piece of art. Ron continued his passion for firearms, enjoyed shooting, gunsmithing, and reloading, he was very excited spending the last year building a rifle to donate to the Montana Wounded Warrior’s Organization. His talent and attention to detail was evident in every bench or rifle he built.

Ron is survived by his wife Linda of 51 years, sons Seth of Helena, MT, Chad (Marsha) of Florence, MT, and daughter Stacey (Chuck) Rasnick of Manhattan, MT; his six grandchildren, Tanner and Ellie Carlson, Charlie (Madi), Sam, Lizzie, and Rocco Rasnick; brothers in law Clay (Cindy) and Daryl (Terry) Halley and their families; niece Lea (Kevin) from Idaho; and many Nebraska cousins. He had a very special bond with his aunts, Jackie Carlson and Darlene Richards and loved to update them on the adventures of his family. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, sister Adare, nephew Nate and in-laws Viv and Chet Halley.

The family would like to thank Hearts and Hands Hospice, Heather and Nadia; Kari and Scott Taylor; Amanda and Shane Gunn; and many others for their help and support for the past few weeks. Memorials may be sent to Hearts and Hands Hospice or a charity of your choice.
