Obituary for Stephen Lance Johnson
Stephen Lance Johnson, 74, of Big Timber, passed away Tuesday June 14, 2016, at the Pioneer Medical Center.
Steve was born on August 31, 1941, to Arnold and Evelyn (Oie) Johnson. He lived in Melville, MT where his father owned the Melville Store. They moved to Big Timber where he attended school, graduating from Sweet Grass County High School in 1959. Following graduation he attended the University of Montana where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) Fraternity. His brothers knick-named him "Whitey".
In 1967 he married Linda Stetzner, a new teacher in town. They had four children. He purchased Oie Motors from his father and ran it until he retired and sold it to his son, Jeff; the 4th generation to own Oies.
Steve was active in Jaycees, Volunteer Firemen and Army Reserves and served on various boards and counsels in the community. He loved bowling and golfing and was especially proud of his "hole in 1" at the Overland Golf Course. He looked forward to having coffee with his buddies at Cole Drug and playing pitch at the Legion. He also was an avid reader and couldn't get enough of oysters on the half shell. Steve and Linda enjoyed traveling with their friends and spending time at their cabin on the Boulder River. Mostly, he was proud of his children and grandchildren and loved them dearly.
He is survived by his wife, Linda, of 49 years, son Michael and Kathy Johnson of San Antonio, TX, daughter Kay Marie and Kevin Downs of Soldotna, AK, son Jeffrey and Laura Johnson, of Big Timber, grandchildren Brett, Julia, Rylee, Nate, Maddie and Brock, sister Kay and Glen Ross of Lacey, WA, and father and mother in law, Leonard and Bernice Stetzner of Big Timber.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Danny, who was MDA poster child for several years.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 2nd, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Memorials in Steve’s name may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
