Obituary for TOM E. HAMMERSMARK
Tom Hammersmark, 84, died Wednesday, July 9, 2014. At the time of his death he was surrounded by his family. A lifelong resident of Sweet Grass County, he was born at McLeod in 1930, moved to the East Boulder and then the Melville areas, and eventually to the ranch west of Big Timber. Tom and Dorothy moved to their current home on Howie road in 1990. In retirement, Tom enjoyed working in the yard and traveling to see family. Tom married Dorothy in 1964 in the Congregational Church and the family grew to include 5 children. Tom and Dorothy recently celebrated their 50th anniversary with a cruise to Alaska, something Tom had especially wanted to do. Until his retirement several years ago, Tom worked on the family ranch raising sheep and cattle and farming. The band of sheep was an annual sight while moving down the roads for summer pastures and back again. In addition to working the ranch, Tom was a well-known member of the community. He was a member of the Woolgrowers, NRA, Farm Bureau, and the Congregational Church. He particularly enjoyed serving as County Commissioner. He enjoyed hunting and being outdoors on a ranch. Tom loved telling stories and always had an appreciative audience. During the last years of his life he and Dorothy travelled extensively to visit their family in various parts of the country. In addition to the Alaska trip, they had recently taken a long road trip through all of the Western states enjoying the scenery and stopping to see family and friends. They had also attended a family wedding in Virginia last December. Tom is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and his children Cindy (Navin), Larry (Theresa), Roger (Leah), Leif (Christina),9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sarah, son Doug and granddaughter Keri.
