Obituary for Tillie S. Nevin Chapel
Tillie S. Nevin Chapel passed away in the early morning of Feb 13, at Billings Health and Rehab, where she had been a resident for the last 10 years. Tillie was born April 30, 1918 to John and Anna Schiltz in Big Timber and raised on the farm in the Gibson area.
She married Thos H Nevin in Roundup Aug. 17, 1939. They made their home on the David and Marie Nevin ranch on Sweet Grass Creek where they started their family of two boys, Daniel in 1944 and Stanley in 1948.
They moved to Big Timber in 1954 and built a house on East 1st Ave. Tillie worked numerous jobs in Big Timber until Joe Vandervort talked her into being a substitute rural route mail carrier which led to her being a contract carrier for over 30 years.
Tillie really enjoyed the coming of spring so she could get her garden planted and groom her rose bushes and other flowers. A few days in the fall and she would have all the produce stripped and canned, ready for the winter ahead. With all the work caught up, or sometimes not, she would grab her fishing pole, dig worms, fix a picnic lunch and head for her favorite fishing holes. It usually ended up with her coming home with the biggest and most fish. Hunting was another of her favorite activities, but not as the shooter. She could pick out the game with the naked eye that the shooters would have a hard time seeing with their high powered rifle scopes. And with a chuckle, she would let them know about it too.
Tillie was a very good shot at the small bore indoor ranges around the state, bringing home numerous medals that she won with her Mod 52 Win target rifle. Always with a smile and willing to help someone out she will be missed by many.
Tillie is survived by her son Stanley (Birdie) Nevin of Big Timber, half-sister Joan (Bill) Shipley, nieces Tammy and Tara, granddaughter Tanya (Lee) Bokma, great granddaughters Anna and Ella, grandson Todd (Jamie) Nevin, great granddaughter Madison and great grandson Mason, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her dad John Schiltz, mother Anna Mathis, brother John Schiltz, half-brother Jim Mathis, her first husband Thos H. Nevin, second husband Robert Chapel, son Daniel and grandson Tye Nevin.
