Obituary for Raymond L. Elgen
Raymond L. Elgen, 90, of Big Timber MT, went to be with The Lord on May 15, 2022. He was born on October 22, 1931 to Phillip and Inger Elgen and was the oldest of three boys. In 1956, Raymond married Mary DeKetele and was blessed with her love for the next 64 years.

Raymond was a devoted husband and father. He deeply loved Mary and supported her in all she did. As a father, he loved on us kids and took every opportunity to encourage us to always do our best. He taught us life skills such as how to be respectful, to leave things better than we found them, and the value of working for a dollar bill. He loved the outdoors and we spent many weekends as a family on the Boulder mountain trails and camping. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends, always having a story to tell and a joke or two.

Before he married Mary, he served in the USAF and was a welding instructor. This opportunity provided education, travel and friendships. Over the years, he held several jobs to support his family. Loving the outdoors, his favorite job came later in his years when he got the opportunity to build and grade roads.

Raymond was a man of many talents and always worked with precision. Being a self-learner, he was a jack-of-all-trades and quite an inventor using any material lying around he could find to solve whatever job needing done. He was not only an expert at welding and building tools or parts on the lathe, he also excelled in wood working; small and large projects. He learned to play piano by ear and in later years, he taught himself to play the violin. He was an avid reader and especially loved reading the Bible and anything to do with Geology.

He served his community as a Volunteer Fireman, was a member of Sons of Norway, a Sunday School Teacher, sang in the Church Choir and was a member of the Church Council.

Raymond touched many hearts throughout his life. He was a true “gentleman”, always considering others before himself. He loved his wife and family and blessed them with many years of happiness.

Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, and his oldest daughter Christine Fogerty. Raymond is survived by his children: Steve Elgen, Corrinne (Radar) Radford, Nadine Sangston, grandchildren: Sundee Fogerty, Blaine (Allie) Sangston, Sloan Fogerty, Britney Sangston, and great-grandchildren: Violet, Lillian and Penelope Sangston.

A celebration of Raymond’s life will be held 11:00am Saturday, July 9, 2022 at the Big Timber Lutheran Church. Graveside services with military honors will follow at 2:00pm at Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber.
