Obituary for Calvin Herbert Lavold
Calvin Herbert Lavold was born September 18, 1924. He was born in Grandmother Berg’s home. He joined his mother Helen Berg Lavold, father Knute Lavold and a little 3 1/2 year old sister Bernice.

He spent his younger years helping at home with farming, milking cows and tending the sheep.

In his early 20s he went to the Community Hall on Big Timber Creek for an evening of music and dancing. He asked a girl to dance. After dating three years they danced together for the next 64 years.

Calvin and Wanda tied the knot on April 5, 1953. A little boy Richard Calvin entered the picture on April 4, 1954. Cal spent lots of evening rocking the littlest Lavold. Five and a half years later daughter Jill joined the family and Calvin rocked some more.

Cal worked for Bob McKinsey after Wanda and Cal were first married. Then he started as summer help with the State Highway Department. The night before his summer job ended a big snow storm hit the county and Cal was hired permanently. He worked there for 30 years. He started a second career with Public Auction Yards and worked for them for the next 25 years.

Cal played Cowboy Polo and won the award for Best Guard in the nation. He and his horse Nuisance were a great team for many years.

While not outspoken about his love for his family, it was present in everything he did. Whether it be building a pantry and benches for Wanda, based on sketches that she did, or just being that quiet dependable presence in our daily lives. Cal had a special way with animals. He earned their trust through his calm, persistent nature. His animals were treated as gently as he treated people.

A man of measured words. When Calvin spoke it was with a great deal of thought. Something he said which we have kept in our hearts. ’Be careful of what you say. You can’t ever take it back.’

Cal was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Knute Lavold and his sister Bernice McGee. He is survived by his wife Wanda, son Richard and his wife Luanne, daughter Jill, granddaughter Brenna (Bret) and their children Jathan and Abigael, grandson Jeremy (Erin) and their son Aiden.

Celebration of life will be at the Big Timber Lutheran Church Friday November 3rd at 11:00 a.m. Luncheon will be served afterward.

In lieu of flowers you can make donations to the Big Timber FFA Food for Sweet Grass program or to the charity of your choice.
