Obituary for BARBARA W. SCHMELING
Barbara W (Kaighn) Schmeling 86, of Harlowton, went home to be with her Savior on Sunday November 16, 2014 at the home of her son Paul in Onalaska, WI. of natural causes. Barbara was born June 30, 1928 to Alan E. and Geraldine M. Kaighn in Salt Lake City, UT and graduated from West High School in 1946. She met her future husband Dale at her church while he was attending photography school. They married June 25, 1950 and she experienced some culture shock when transitioning to Harlowton, MT. Her only outside job was as a telephone operator for AT & T/ Mountain Bell for a few years. The rest of her time was spent being a homemaker and helping Dale as part of Schmeling Studio, doing the hand painting before color photography was standard. She was an integral part of the business, including retouching photos and assisting Dale at area schools with groups and individual photos, proms, and Senior portraits. Throughout her life, Barb exemplified how a true Christian lives and loves, just as Christ loves all of us. She loved the Lord first and let that love and joy, including many hugs, touch everyone she encountered - especially her family. She sang for years in the choir at the Federated Church where she was a member; and for many weddings, funerals, and other events including the Kiwanis Minstrel Shows, as a member of the Harlowton Music Club. She also greatly enjoyed sewing and the flowers in their garden. Barbara was preceded in death by parents, her brother Bob, and in Dec. 2013 her husband W. Dale Schmeling. She is survived by her children, Carol (Jim) DeLong of Las Vegas, NV; Paul (Susan) of Onalaska, WI, and Laura Kuchera of Billings, MT; two brothers Kenneth and David Kaighn; 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-granddaughters. Memorials can be made to the Federated Church in Harlowton or to the Christian charity of your choice.
