Obituary for JOHN F. NICHOLSON
John Fredrick Nicholson passed away on December 25, 2015 at the age of 88. John was being comforted by his family at High Country Care in Bozeman at the time of his death. John was born in Big Timber, MT on June 28, 1927. He was one of five children born to Stuart and Alvhild Nicholson. He graduated from Sweet Grass High School in 1945 and he served in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan. John liked being his own boss. He and his brother Chuck ran the Nicholson grocery store in Big Timber. He owned and operated John's Drive In in Bozeman, where the burgers are still talked about to this day. He also had a caf̩ in Manhattan, MT for several years. John loved to work a crossword, cook, garden and paint and he was good at all of them. Both family and friends enjoyed his flower gardens and a good meal whenever they could. His paintings adorn the walls of many family and friends and will always be a wonderful reminder. Most important to John was his family and friends. His mother Alvhild was his role model and best friend. He loved getting the family together, especially on the 4th of July at the beloved family cabin in Bear Canyon. After retirement, with his wife Anna Mae, he purchased a dream condo in Bucerias Mexico and would split time between there and the cabin. I could not have asked for a better father or friend. He will be missed and always remembered. John was preceded in death by his parents Stuart and Alvhild (Crest) Nicholson, his siblings Margaret Brown, Charles Nicholson, Walter Nicholson and Dorothy Hooper and son Stuart "Joe" Nicholson. John is survived by his wife Anna Mae (Sipes) Nicholson, his son Jeffrey John (Teri) Nicholson, his stepchildren Jennie Thompson, Sandra Mooney and Ron Mooney along with several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Special thanks to the staff at High Country Care for being like part of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name may be made to Heart of the Valley Animal Shelter, PO Box 11390, Bozeman, MT 59719.
