Obituary for Bernard 'Ben' Berg
Ben passed away peacefully shortly after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He was raised on a ranch south of Shawmut, Montana with one sister and six brothers. Many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends lived on nearby ranches and their lives were deeply intertwined which made for a happy childhood. He attended rural schools and graduated from Sweet Grass County High School in Big Timber in 1955. He graduated from Montana State College in Bozeman in 1959 where he was President of the Sigma Nu Fraternity and sang in a musical group called the Twilight Trio. After college, he was drafted into the Army.
He married Nyla Opland of Big Timber in 1961. After working in Billings for several years, they moved to Big Timber in 1964. He owned Starr Ford for over 20 years and after selling the dealership, he worked in the insurance business for many years until his retirement. He then spent many fun years playing golf, pitch and bridge with good friends. He loved this community and was an active participant in the Jaycees and the Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife Nyla. They would have celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary in December. Also survived by 3 children, Ross of Big Timber, Jess (Lynda) of Billings and Kristi Fischer (Dan) of Lakeside. He absolutely loved his four grandchildren Griffin and Keaton Fischer and Ashton and Kenadie Berg. Also survived by his sister Tookie Gee and brothers Arnold(Diane), Lloyd(Linda) and Glenn(Holly) Berg of Big Timber and brother Harry(Linda) of Great Falls and sister-in-law Joan of Livingston. He is preceded in death by his parents Henry and Ruth Berg, brothers John and Dick, and brother-in-law Lawrence Gee.
His ever present smile and good cheer will be missed and we were truly blessed to share his life.
